Itur ad astra

Bram Stoker var invigd i mysterier. Och inviger sina läsare. Solen går upp, det är en gyllene gryning. Under läsningen av hans The Jewel of Seven Stars (1903) slår mig tanken: han skriver för att sprida och inviga läsare i Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawns läror. På ett grundläggande och omedvetet plan kanske, surdegen som knådas in i kulturen genom den gripande berättelsen. Han var invigd i orden, men hur långt vet jag inte. Men detta: solens uppgång, så central i Dracula, så central i The Jewel of Seven Stars - golden dawn! Och en häntydning till det som i våra dagar går under beteckningen Ancient Aliens, eller AA, men mer sofistikerad, i linje med avancerad teosofi, och astrospiritismen hos Allan Kardec och Camille Flammarion. Från stjärnorna och tillbaka igen. Ett kretslopp, en evolution, från Gud till Gud. Patetiskt för nutida läsare kanske, men gripande för romantiska sinnen.

Far och dotter Trelawny till Malcolm Ross, barrister, inför The Great Experiment, då queen Tera ska återuppstå:

'The proof that resurrection can be accomplished!' That is much. A marvellous thing in this age of science, and the scepticism that knowledge makes. But life and resurrection are themselves but items in what may be won by the accomplishment of this Great Experiment. Imagine what it will be for the world of thought--the true world of human progress--the veritable road to the Stars, the itur ad astra of the Ancients--if there can come back to us out of the unknown past one who can yield to us the lore stored in the great Library of Alexandria, and lost in its consuming flames."
